This case involves a 10 month old trach/vent patient who has been hospitalized for almost 3 months. This patient was healthy at birth, however, due to complications during a routine procedure, the patient has suffered a brain injury that has severally altered the course of his life. Both parents are currently undergoing training on how to care for the patient as they plan for discharge soon. This has prevented the patient’s father from working consistently and resulted in them falling behind on bills. This patient has several diagnoses including; PTSD, anxiety, depression, and other mental health struggles. This patient is seen by a therapist through her school, however, due to having to attend so many clinic appointments with ACH, the patient has missed several of her therapy appointments. This has caused her struggle with mental health to worsen and as the patient gets closer to transitioning to adult medicine after being followed by ACH for so long, the patient’s mother feels that a service dog may help the patient better navigate these stressors. The patient’s mom has been unsuccessful in finding a program that would provide a service dog pro-bono, but she has recently found a program that would help the family find an animal as well as train it to provide the services the patient needs.
