Is a donation to the Baby Sharon Fund a federal tax deduction?

Yes, a contribution to the Arkansas Baby Sharon Fund may be eligible for a federal income tax deduction as a charitable gift.

The fund is a state-created trust fund—officially known as the Baby Sharon's Children's Catastrophic Illness Grant Program Trust Fund—established by Arkansas law to provide financial assistance to families with children facing serious medical conditions.

Federal Deductibility Requirements

To claim a federal deduction for this contribution:

  • Itemized Deductions: You must generally itemize your deductions on Schedule A (Form 1040) rather than taking the standard deduction.
    • Note: Beginning in tax year 2026, some "above-the-line" cash contribution deductions may be available for non-itemizers, up to $1,000 for single filers or $2,000 for joint filers.
  • Qualified Organization: Under IRS rules, contributions to a state or its political subdivisions (like a state trust fund) are deductible if made exclusively for public purposes.
  • No Specific Individuals: You cannot deduct contributions earmarked for a specific child or family. Since the Baby Sharon Fund Advisory Council independently determines grant recipients based on need, contributions made to the fund generally satisfy this requirement.
